This half-term, we’ll be learning about the Roman invasion of Britain, focusing on the changes that the Romans brought to Britain, both at the time and over time.

English:

During the Spring term, our English units of work are newspaper articles, Roman city guides and play scripts.

Our first English unit is newspaper articles and will be linked to our History topic, ‘The Romans.’ The outcome of this unit of work will be to create a Roman news article on the events surrounding the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

We will continue to have daily whole class guided reading sessions which will include reading and responding to texts, making predictions, deductions and evaluating the text. Our first text is Star in Jars by Chrissie Gittens, and then we’ll move onto reading The Journey by  Aaron Becker.

Maths:

Multiplication and Division - Recalling and using multiplication and division facts up to 12 x 12. We will learn to recognise and use factor pairs and commutativity in mental calculations.

Formal written method for multiplication - We will learn how to multiply two-digit and three-digit numbers by a one-digit number using formal written layout.

Formal written method for division - We will learn how to divide two-digit and three-digit numbers by a one-digit number using formal written layout (bus-stop method).

Length and perimeter - Measuring in kilometres and metres, calculating perimeter and finding missing lengths.

History:

We will learn about what Romans brought to Britain, both at the time and over time. Opportunities are taken to use the strong archaeological record that exists for the children to reconstruct aspects of Roman life from the fragmentary evidence, some of which will be local. Much of the learning is very active, be it the living graph showing the changing fortunes of Boudica, or a reconstruction relay to discover what Roman armour and weapons were like.

Computing:

We are continuing to develop our coding skills that we learnt within Autumn 1.

Music:

Structure and pitch.

RE:

We will be learning about Hindu rituals.

Art:

In Art, we are looking at sculpture, inspired by the works of Barbara Rae, in order to make landscape tiles.

PE:

Indoor PE: Line Dancing

Outdoor games: Ultimate Frisbee
