PE, Sport & Physical Activity
Kings Worthy Primary School - Curriculum Rationale
Intent
Learning in Physical Education is underpinned by our School’s BEST Values and by the National Curriculum and Early Years Foundation Stage guidance. Kings Worthy’s children will experience a variety of physical opportunities both within PE lessons, at break time and lunchtime, and through competitive opportunities in and outside of school allowing them to be active. From our curriculum, pupils will become physically educated through experiencing a range of activity areas that:
- Build their confidence to take part in physical activity.
- Develop competence in a range of physical skills concentrating on the fundamental movement skills.
- Be creative across a variety of activities.
- Develop perseverance and resilience and encouraging others to keep going.
- Encourage children to live healthy lives both physically and mentally.
- Be reflective practitioners through identifying the need to improve and how to achieve this.
- Are inclusive and encourage cooperation and collaboration in a range of experiences.
Implementation
At Kings Worthy, physical education is an integral part of our curriculum, it is inclusive, and engages all pupils. Children participate in high-quality PE lessons twice a week, covering at least two different sports/activities per term. Children develop the knowledge, skills and competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities and age appropriate sports. We aim to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities, which enables all children to achieve their personal best. Class teachers with a wealth of expertise lead PE lessons. The PE lead regularly monitors and supports teachers and LSAs to ensure up to date knowledge and skills. Teachers use, and adapt, bespoke whole school PE planning and resources to ensure lessons across years show progression in line with the PE progression of skills document. Classes follow the PE long term planning to ensure pupils participate in a variety of sports and activities.
Children participate in competitive sport and we teach them to transfer the Kings Worthy’s Vision of being the BEST into all activities, ensuring they think for themselves, to become curious, to engage with life imaginatively and discover their own minds, to establish their own values and measures of success. These competitions, both inter and intra school, are linked to the other Winchester and North Eastleigh Schools, wider into Hampshire and if successful in the Hampshire School Games. We aim for all children to be physically active for sustained periods of time and be able to make informed decisions to lead healthy and active lives. All classes participate in a variety of activities to help students meet the 30 minutes of daily physical activity at school, for example, The Golden Mile, Cosmic Yoga, GoNoodle and a variety of other activities. Lunchtime supervisors including our newly appointed Play Leader are tasked with organising physical activities and small games for children to interact with at lunchtime; this is supported by the PE lead. Swimming is an important life skill; we aspire for all children to leave primary school being able to swim at least 25 metres. The children undertake swimming for ten weeks in Year 3 and where needed will be topped up in Year 4/5. Children in Year 5 participate in Bike Ability sessions, Year 5 in a school camp and Year 6 in an off-site Residential at Calshot in the Summer term.
We provide children with opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities that are inclusive, enjoyable and increase children’s physical activity. We track children who attend these sessions and identify target children who may benefit from these. Our staff remove barriers to taking part in these events, offering encouragement, full equipment (including clothing) and transportation. Annually, the school celebrates Sports Day to educate and promote a healthy lifestyle and physical activity. Children engage in a wide range of inclusive, competitive activities and sports. Linking to our House system, a strong emphasis is placed on our school values: Belong, Enjoy, Success and Try: ‘Being the BEST we can be in all that we do’.
Impact
The impact of our school Physical Education curriculum can be seen within this rationale, in the whole school long-term plan and within our sports premium document. We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom will enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for living and active life. They will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
